- Explain how anesthesia care is billed and paid and how surgical duration affects the charges.
- Recognize the hidden costs of increasing coverage ratios in an anesthesia staffing models.
- Show why using “per provider” measurements can lead to inaccurate benchmarking of clinical productivity.
Biography:
Dr. Amr Abouleish is a professor of Anesthesiology, a Pediatric Anesthesiologist, and the Vice-Chair for Faculty Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He is also the Immediate Past President of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and the current Director from Texas on the American Society of Anesthesiologists Board of Directors.
He received his medical degree from the University of Texas, Houston, and completed residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with Harvard Medical School. While at UTMB, he completed his MBA at the University of Houston Clear Lake.
Dr. Abouleish’s research interests include the economics of anesthesia care, specifically the measurement and benchmarking of clinical productivity in anesthesiologists and anesthesiology groups. He speaks nationally on this topic. He is on several ASA committees, including the Committee on Economics. He is a past chair of the ASA Committee on Practice Management. He is also the ASA member of the AMA RVU Update Committee (AMA RUC).
