Metha-do’s and Metha-don’ts: the Role of Perioperative Methadone 

Guest Speaker: Shyam Desai, MD

Objectives:

       Recognize the importance of treating perioperative pain

       Review methadone pharmacodynamics, contraindications, and uses

       Design perioperative methadone based analgesic plans

Dr. Shyam Desai, MD is currently an Interventional Pain Fellow at University Hospitals/Case Western in Cleveland, Ohio. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Dr. Desai spent a year working in a basic neuroscience research laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital investigating the neural circuitry of resiliency under Dr. Dani Dumitriu, MD, PhD. He then went on to medical school at Rush Medical College where he developed an interest in acute and chronic pain management, and completed his anesthesiology residency at Rush University Medical Center where he was a Chief Resident in his final year. His areas of interest include perioperative pain management techniques and interventional chronic pain management. He is an avid fan of the New York Jets, New York Mets and New Haven style pizza.
