James P. Rathmell, MD, is the Leroy D. Vandam Distinguished Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and former Chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology for the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. He is an academic anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist devoted to clinical care, research, and the education of physicians and physicians-in-training. His scholarly work has included both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials evaluating the safety and effectiveness of emerging therapies for acute and chronic pain, with a particular emphasis on improving evidence-based practice and patient safety. Dr. Rathmell currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of ANESTHESIOLOGY, the leading scientific journal of the specialty. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to teaching and mentorship, regularly engaging learners and colleagues across the anesthesiology community worldwide.
